Rio Tinto partners with Ngarluma for 80-MW solar project

Rio Tinto is developing an 80-MW solar project in Western Australia to power its iron ore mining operations. The project is a collaboration with the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and aims to supply green power for the mining activities. The solar park will be located near Karratha and is expected to displace 11% of natural gas currently used for power generation at Rio Tinto's sites in the Pilbara region.

The feasibility study for the project will be finalized next year, with commissioning scheduled for 2027. Rio Tinto estimates that the solar farm could reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by up to 120,000 tonnes annually and aims to have between 600 MW and 700 MW of renewable energy by 2030 to replace gas in its Pilbara power network.

What are the environmental benefits of Rio Tinto's 80-MW solar project in Western Australia?
