  • NERSA greenlights four utility-scale solar PV licences totaling 890 MW under REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3, clearing the way for Red Rocket and Engie’s projects to boost clean energy and cut coal reliance.

South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (NERSA) has approved generation licences for four utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects totaling 890 MW under Bid Window 7.3 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). The licences clear the way for the projects to proceed in the competitive procurement pipeline that funds private renewable investment.

The solar parks are being developed by Red Rocket and Engie, adding new clean electricity capacity as South Africa seeks to bolster energy security and reduce dependence on coal. NERSA said the approvals support the country’s longer-term climate and energy transition goals, with the projects expected to strengthen the national electricity system once operational.

Which REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3 solar projects did NERSA license, totaling 890 MW?

  • Red Rocket – utility-scale solar PV project(s) under REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3 (part of the total 890 MW licensed)
  • Red Rocket – additional utility-scale solar PV project under REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3 (part of the total 890 MW licensed)
  • Engie – utility-scale solar PV project(s) under REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3 (part of the total 890 MW licensed)
  • Engie – additional utility-scale solar PV project under REIPPPP Bid Window 7.3 (part of the total 890 MW licensed)

Total licensed capacity: 890 MW across four Bid Window 7.3 solar PV projects (developers: Red Rocket and Engie).
