LONGi Breaks 27% Solar Cell Efficiency

Dec 21, 2023 10:58 AM ET
  • LONGi sets record with 27.09% efficiency solar cells, made with all-laser patterning process. Cutting costs and indium usage, LONGi is paving the way for brighter future of solar PV.

LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd., the world's largest integrated solar module maker, has announced that it has developed solar cells with 27.09% efficiency, certified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH) in Germany. The cells are HBC (heterojunction back-contact) cells, developed using an all-laser patterning process and breaking the 26.81% efficiency record announced in November 2022. The all-laser patterning process has mitigated the problem of the high patterning cost for back-contact cells.

The ultra-thin transparent conductive oxide layer used in the 27.09% efficiency record cell has reduced the indium usage by 1/5 of that of traditional bifacial heterojunction solar cells. Professor Martin Green, considered the father of modern PV, has indicated that he sees IBC made in China from firms such as LONGi as the future of solar PV. He predicted a bright future for IBC over the next 5 years, also acknowledging LONGi’s achievement in making of a world record for silicon-perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency of 33.9%.
