- ib vogt and AirTrunk launch Malaysia’s first data-centre renewable VPPA under CGPP: a 29.99MW solar project powering the grid via long-term clean energy supply.
German renewable developer ib vogt and Australian data-centre operator AirTrunk have begun commercial operations of a 29.99-MW solar project in Malaysia, using a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA). The facility supplies renewable electricity to the Malaysian grid to support AirTrunk’s local data-centre operations.
The project is the first renewable energy VPPA for a data centre under Malaysia’s Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP), the companies said. Developed by ib vogt, it is part of AirTrunk’s plan to source 100% of electricity consumption across its data-centre platform from renewable power by 2030, aligning with broader national decarbonisation goals.
How does ib vogt and AirTrunk’s 29.99-MW Malaysia solar VPPA support data centers?
- Converts corporate renewable targets into contracted energy: AirTrunk secures long-term access to renewable generation output via the VPPA rather than building owning generation directly at each data center site.
- Enables “renewable-backed” electricity procurement: electricity produced by the 29.99-MW solar plant is fed into the Malaysian grid, and the VPPA provides AirTrunk with contractual rights to the renewable attributes associated with that output.
- Supports decarbonisation of data-centre power: by increasing the share of renewable-linked electricity used for compute operations, the arrangement helps reduce the carbon intensity of AirTrunk’s local data-centre electricity supply.
- Improves procurement bankability for clean power: a long-term agreement gives the solar project revenue certainty, which can lower financing risk and support delivery of renewable capacity that data centers can reliably count on.
- Aligns with Malaysia’s Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP): because it is structured under the CGPP framework, the scheme is designed to help large users claim corporate renewable electricity in line with programme rules and documentation.
- Provides flexibility without grid connectivity constraints: since the solar plant supplies the grid at large, AirTrunk can meet renewable coverage goals without needing a direct physical power link from each data centre to a dedicated generator.
- Strengthens reporting and claims: contract documentation for renewable attributes (subject to CGPP verification/requirements) supports sustainability reporting for customers and corporate commitments.
- Reduces exposure to fossil-linked volatility: long-term renewable contracting can help stabilize the renewable component of power procurement against market uncertainty over time.
