  • SolarDuck, TNB Renewables and TNB Research are partnering to construct a 780-kW OFS research facility off the coast of Tioman Island in Malaysia. Their goal is to evaluate the feasibility of net zero emissions while providing a reliable and cost competitive energy supply. Hydro's aluminium profiles will be used for the project, with completion targeted for 2025.
Floating Solar: Malaysia Taps Into Offshore Potential

SolarDuck, TNB Renewables and TNB Research have teamed up to install a 780-kW offshore floating solar (OFS) research facility off the coast of Tioman island in Malaysia. The project, due for completion by 2025, will help to assess the technology's feasibility in the country, with the goal of achieving net zero emissions while providing a reliable and cost competitive energy supply. Hydro will supply the aluminium profiles for the project.

Can Floating Solar Power Malaysia?

  • In 2020, Malaysia has a renewable energy target of 20% of total energy mix by 2025
  • In 2020, the Malaysian government has also announced an additional RM 1 Billion (USD$ 250 million) funding to support the development of renewable energy
  • The use of offshore floating solar is expected to reduce the competition of land space for agriculture and other uses, providing a more sustainable energy production
  • The installation of the 780kW offshore floating solar is expected to reduce carbon emissions from traditional power generation by 830 tonnes of CO2 annually
