Enel Powers Up Eaton Plant with Largest Microgrid
- Enel North America leads the way in sustainable energy with Puerto Rico's largest clean microgrid at Eaton's facility, reducing carbon footprint and enhancing energy resilience.
Enel North America has completed Puerto Rico's largest clean energy microgrid at Eaton's manufacturing facility in Arecibo. The 5-MW solar system, along with a 1.1-MW battery and existing generators, will reduce the facility's carbon footprint and ease stress on the island's utility infrastructure. Enel financed the project under an energy-as-a-service model and provided installation expertise and technologies for the microgrid system.
The Italian utility group's North American arm also plans to construct a second microgrid at Eaton's Las Piedras facility in Puerto Rico. This move comes as large energy users are increasingly turning to sustainable power solutions in the face of worsening climate change impacts. Eaton's president for the Americas Region, Mike Yelton, emphasized the need for more sustainable, resilient, and affordable power for communities and businesses worldwide.
What are the benefits of Enel's clean energy microgrid in Puerto Rico?
- Reducing carbon footprint: The clean energy microgrid will help reduce the facility's carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
- Relieving stress on utility infrastructure: By utilizing clean energy sources and battery storage, the microgrid will help ease stress on the island's utility infrastructure, especially during peak demand periods.
- Energy-as-a-service model: Enel financed the project under an energy-as-a-service model, providing a cost-effective and efficient way for Eaton to access clean energy solutions.
- Resilient power supply: The microgrid system will provide a more resilient power supply for Eaton's manufacturing facility, reducing the risk of power outages and disruptions.
- Sustainable power solutions: The construction of the microgrid reflects a growing trend among large energy users to adopt sustainable power solutions in response to the impacts of climate change.
- Affordable power: By investing in clean energy microgrids, businesses like Eaton can access more affordable power solutions in the long term, reducing operational costs and increasing energy efficiency.
