- Final solar panels are in at Contact Energy’s 150MWac/170MWdc Kowhai Park near Christchurch—moving closer to commissioning, boosting South Island renewables, and supporting New Zealand’s clean energy goals.
Contact Energy Ltd and partners have installed the final solar panel at the 150-MWac/170-MWdc Kowhai Park solar farm near Christchurch International Airport in New Zealand. The project, one of the largest in the country, follows completion of the installation of thousands of photovoltaic panels across the site.
The milestone marks the move into final stages before commissioning and commercial operation. When brought online, Kowhai Park is expected to help meet future electricity demand in the South Island and expand New Zealand’s renewable capacity, supporting the country’s decarbonization goals and Contact Energy’s broader investment strategy in sustainable generation.
When will Kowhai Park’s 150-MW solar farm begin commercial operations near Christchurch?
- Kowhai Park’s 150-MW solar farm is expected to begin commercial operations after it completes commissioning and grid testing following the installation of its final solar panels.
- The project’s entry into commercial service is therefore expected in the next phase “in the coming months,” rather than immediately now that panel installation has finished.
- Commissioning typically follows panel completion and involves energising the plant, running performance and safety checks, and verifying output and protections with the grid before formal commercial operation starts.
- The site is near Christchurch International Airport, and the move to commercial operations will mark the shift from construction activities into full generation that contributes to South Island supply.
- Once operating, the plant is intended to add to New Zealand’s utility-scale solar capacity and support longer-term decarbonisation by displacing fossil generation with renewable electricity.
