  • Axpo inaugurates Spain’s 200-MWp Vilecha solar complex—four PV plants online in León. Expected 377+ GWh yearly, powering 100,000 homes, with McDonald’s and Rockwool PPAs.

Swiss utility Axpo officially inaugurated its largest solar project to date, the 200-MWp Vilecha complex in Spain’s León province. The facility comprises four 50-MWp photovoltaic plants that are now connected to the Spanish grid, supplying renewable electricity from a 310-hectare site.

Axpo expects the project to generate more than 377 GWh annually, enough to power about 100,000 households. The installation includes roughly 365,000 solar panels with tracker systems to boost output. Some production is already contracted: McDonald’s Spain will buy 83 GWh per year for 10 years under a long-term power purchase agreement, while Rockwool signed a separate renewable supply deal starting in 2027.

What does Axpo’s 200-MWp Vilecha solar inauguration deliver in output and contracts?

  • Output capacity: 200 MWp total nameplate (built as four separate 50-MWp PV plants).
  • Annual electricity generation: expected to exceed 377 GWh per year.
  • Household equivalent: that annual output is projected to cover demand for around 100,000 homes.
  • Technology and expected performance lift: about 365,000 PV modules using solar-tracking systems to improve energy yield versus fixed-tilt designs.
  • Project scale: deployed across roughly 310 hectares, with the plants now tied into Spain’s grid.

Contracted generation:

  • McDonald’s Spain has a long-term power purchase arrangement for 83 GWh per year, lasting 10 years.
  • Rockwool has agreed to receive renewable electricity under a separate supply agreement starting in 2027.
  • Remaining volume: the rest of the project’s expected production is available beyond the already-negotiated offtake deals (not all output is covered by the named contracts).
