RES Group Seeks Permit for 30-MW Solar Park in England
RES Group has applied for a permit to build a 30-MW solar park with storage in the West Midlands of England. The project, named Leaford solar farm, aims to generate electricity for around 8,000 homes per year. The developer is seeking permission from the Stafford Borough Council for the construction of the plant on land between Stallington and Saverley Green in Staffordshire. The project includes plans for biodiversity measures such as wildflower meadows, native trees, and hedgehog houses. RES Group has made changes to the original design based on community feedback, including reshaping the layout to address visibility concerns and repositioning the site entrance to prevent tree loss. If approved, the project could deliver a 74% net gain in biodiversity.
What measures is RES Group taking to enhance biodiversity at Leaford solar farm?
Planting wildflower meadows to support pollinators and other wildlife
Incorporating native trees to provide habitat for birds and other species
Installing hedgehog houses to encourage hedgehog populations in the area
Reshaping the layout of the solar farm to address visibility concerns and minimize impact on local wildlife
Repositioning the site entrance to prevent tree loss and protect existing habitats
Implementing measures to ensure a 74% net gain in biodiversity if the project is approved

RES Proposes 49.9-MW Battery in Devon for Grid Balancing
RES Group is seeking permission to install a 49.9-MW battery energy storage system in Devon, Southwest England, following positive feedback from the local community. The proposal has been submitted to the Torridge District Council and is expected to be reviewed by the Planning Committee in the coming months. The battery facility will be used by National Grid to balance fluctuations in electricity demand and generation, and will connect directly to a 132-kV overhead powerline. The construction of the BESS is estimated to take about 12 months and will include biodiversity measures such as planting native hedgerows, grasslands, and wildflower areas. RES, which has been active in the battery energy storage sector for a decade, has developed over 700MW of projects in the UK and Ireland. The company's Top Gun Energy Storage Project aims to address the need for such facilities in the region and contribute to the overall energy infrastructure.
What environmental measures will RES Group implement for their 49.9-MW battery energy storage system?
Implementing native hedgerows, grasslands, and wildflower areas to promote biodiversity
Using sustainable construction materials and practices to minimize environmental impact
Implementing measures to reduce noise and visual impact on the surrounding area
Monitoring and managing any potential impacts on local wildlife during construction and operation
Implementing a decommissioning plan to ensure the site is restored to its natural state once the facility reaches the end of its lifespan.
