  • Helexia unveils 28 solar rooftops in Romania, powering Auchan and Leroy Merlin stores while slashing carbon emissions by 8,000 tonnes—illuminating the path to sustainable shopping!

Helexia, a subsidiary of French renewables firm Voltalia SA, has launched 28 rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Romania with a total capacity of 12.8 MW. These installations, part of a collaboration with Auchan Retail and Leroy Merlin, cover 16 Auchan outlets and 12 Leroy Merlin sites in Oradea. Collectively, the solar arrays are expected to generate over 14 GWh of electricity annually, supplying 20%-30% of each store’s energy needs.

The solar systems comprise 27,000 PV panels spread over more than 63,000 square meters of rooftops. Voltalia estimates that the initiative will help save over 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and reduce energy costs for both Auchan Retail and Leroy Merlin. Helexia will own the PV arrays as part of this agreement.

What benefits do Helexia's new solar installations provide to Auchan and Leroy Merlin?

The recent launch of 28 rooftop solar installations by Helexia in collaboration with Auchan and Leroy Merlin offers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond mere cost savings. Here are several key advantages:

  • Energy Independence: By generating their own electricity, Auchan and Leroy Merlin can reduce reliance on grid power and mitigate the impact of fluctuating energy prices.
  • Sustainability Goals: The installations align with corporate social responsibility objectives, enhancing both retailers’ reputations as environmentally responsible businesses committed to reducing their carbon footprints.
  • Enhanced Brand Image: Utilization of renewable energy sources can bolster brand loyalty among environmentally conscious consumers, potentially attracting a broader customer base that prioritizes sustainability.
  • Operational Resilience: With a portion of their energy needs met through on-site solar generation, both retailers can enhance their operational resilience against potential utility outages or energy supply disruptions.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Incentives: The shift towards renewable energy can help Auchan and Leroy Merlin comply with government regulations regarding emissions and sustainability while also potentially qualifying them for various grants or tax incentives.
  • Long-Term Cost Savings: Although the initial investment might be significant, the long-term reduction in energy costs coupled with fixed energy pricing can lead to substantial financial savings over the lifespan of the solar panels.
  • Community Engagement: The solar projects can serve as a model of sustainable practices that encourage local community members and other businesses to consider similar initiatives, fostering a broader culture of sustainability.
  • Job Creation: The installation and maintenance of the solar arrays can contribute to local employment opportunities, which can have positive socio-economic impacts in the regions where the stores operate.
  • Energy Security: By producing their own energy, Auchan and Leroy Merlin can better control their energy futures and protect against market volatility, contributing to long-term energy security.
  • Innovation Leadership: By adopting advanced renewable technologies, Auchan and Leroy Merlin position themselves as leaders in innovation within the retail sector, showcasing their commitment to incorporating cutting-edge solutions for sustainability.

These benefits highlight how Helexia's solar installations provide strategic advantages for Auchan Retail and Leroy Merlin, reinforcing their commitment to environmental stewardship while also supporting their operational efficiencies.
