  • Among the largest obstacles in using renewable resource effectively is the opportunity to store power on a large scale. SaltX Technology AB has partnered with Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) to fix this in terms of heat energy.

"The storage space service resembles a "salt battery". It is based on a basic chemical procedure with a very usual material, calcium oxide produced from limestone, with enhanced homes by our nanocoating procedure", explains Carl-Johan Liner, CEO of SaltX.

Simplified, when calcium oxide reacts with water, it develops into calcium hydroxide as well as launches heat. Respectively, when calcium hydroxide is dried, it takes in heat.

SFW has actually designed a fluidized bed pilot reactor, which acts as the factor of discharge, where the salt launches the heat. The new 100 kW activator in SaltX's new screening setup in Sweden, near Stockholm, combines the performance of SaltX's copyrighted nanocoated salt with SFW's fluidized bed innovation.

"SFW's innovation has substantial potential to take the salt battery service to the following, industrial level in terms of size, with high effectiveness. Our activator can blend the salt as well as the water vapour extremely effectively, which makes it premium compared to various other technologies particularly in very large-scale applications.", emphasizes Timo Jantti, SVP Technology as well as R and D at SFW.

The pilot will certainly be appointed at the start of 2021. As the following action, SaltX plans to additional scale-up to discharge 1 MW of thermal power in a demonstration project.
