THDC Powers Up Karnataka: 3270 MW of Clean Energy Projects

THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) has announced plans to build 3,270 megawatts (MWs) of renewable energy projects in Karnataka. The projects will include ground-mounted, floating solar projects, and hybrid projects, with pumped storage projects playing a key role. The projects will be developed in collaboration with Karnataka Power Corporation Limited and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited. THDCIL already has 10 projects in its portfolio, including hydro, thermal, wind and solar, with a total capacity of 4,516 MW. Karnataka has become a hub for renewable energy investment, and the THDC projects are set to further strengthen the presence of renewable energy in the region.

What Role Will Pumped Storage Play in THDCIL's 3,270 MW Karnataka Projects?

• Pumped storage is a form of energy storage that uses electric pumps to move water between two reservoirs located at different heights.
• The water from the higher reservoir is then released through a turbine to generate electricity when there is an increased demand for power.
• The pumped storage projects in THDCIL's 3,270 MW Karnataka projects will provide the much needed flexibility in renewable energy generation.
• The projects will provide a buffer to store excess energy generated during periods of low demand, and to release the stored energy during periods of high demand.
• This will enable the renewable energy projects to ensure efficient, reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the grid.
• The projects are also expected to reduce the need for conventional thermal-based energy sources and increase the share of renewable energy in Karnataka's energy mix.
