  • Funded by Vinnova and Scania, this research project is developing a solar-powered hybrid truck with a 560-horsepower plug-in hybrid and 18m trailer covered with 100 sqm solar panels. Expected to reduce emissions and sell electricity to the grid, the truck is being tested by Ernsts Express AB.
Sweden Tests Solar-Powered Hybrid Truck

Sweden’s Vinnova agency and Scania have funded a research project to develop solar-powered hybrid trucks with low climate impact. The truck has a 560-horsepower plug-in hybrid and an 18 metre trailer covered with 100 sqm of lightweight, flexible solar panels with a maximum efficiency of 13.2 kWp. The panels are estimated to deliver 8,000 kWh a year, with the batteries having a total capacity of 300 kWh. The project includes research on tandem solar cells that could double the solar energy generated compared to current panels. The truck is being tested by haulage company Ernsts Express AB, and there is a potential to sell the truck’s surplus electricity to the grid. This project is part of a shift towards sustainable transport and is expected to decrease emissions in the transport sector.

What Benefits will Sweden's Solar-Powered Hybrid Trucks Bring?

  • Reduction in carbon emissions: The solar-powered hybrid trucks will reduce carbon emissions due to its plug-in hybrid engine, which consumes less fuel than a normal combustion engine.
  • Increased efficiency: The solar panels are expected to deliver 8,000 kWh a year, while the batteries have a total capacity of 300 kWh. This will provide a more efficient energy supply and decrease reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Research opportunities: The project includes research on tandem solar cells, which could double the solar energy generated compared to current panels. This could lead to further advances in solar technology and potential to sell the truck’s surplus electricity to the grid.
  • Increased sustainability: The solar-powered hybrid trucks will lead to a shift towards sustainable transport, helping to reduce emissions in the transport sector.
