Oct 30, 2023 06:32 PM ET
  • Duke Energy's innovative pilot project in DeBary, Florida, will feature green hydrogen production, storage and combustion technology. In collaboration with GE Vernova and Sargent and Lundy, the project will create the first combustion turbine running on up to 100% hydrogen. Construction starts this year and is expected to be operational by 2024.
Green H2 Demo Plant: Duke's Florida Project

Duke Energy has announced a pilot project to build an end-to-end green hydrogen production, storage and combustion site in DeBary, Florida. The project, in partnership with Sargent and Lundy and GE Vernova, will feature two 1-MW electrolyser units to be powered by the 74.5-MW DeBary Solar PV Park. The hydrogen output will be stored in containers and used to fuel a combustion turbine, running on a natural gas/hydrogen blend or up to 100%. Construction is set to commence later this year and become fully operational in 2024. The project will create the first combustion turbine running on such a high percentage of hydrogen.

What Percent Hydrogen Will Duke Energy's DeBary Project Run On?

  • The DeBary hydrogen project, located in DeBary, Florida, will run on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen fuel, with the possibility of running up to 100% hydrogen.
  • The project is powered by the 74.5-MW DeBary Solar PV Park and will feature two 1-MW electrolyser units as part of the end-to-end green hydrogen production, storage and combustion site.
  • Construction of the project is set to commence this year with a completion date of 2024.
  • Upon completion, the combustion turbine will be the first of its type to run on such a high percentage of hydrogen.
  • The exact percentage of hydrogen that the DeBary project will run on is yet to be determined, however the project could run as high as 100% hydrogen.
