SSE Reaches FID on 320MW UK Battery

SSE Renewables has reached a Final Investment Decision to proceed with the construction of a 320MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Monk Fryston, Yorkshire. The 640MWh grid-scale battery is SSE Renewables’ third BESS development to reach this stage, with construction set to commence in the coming months. The Monk Fryston site can run for up to two hours has the potential to store power to be released to the national grid when demand is highest, and it also connects directly to the existing transmission network. SSE Renewables has a 1.2GW pipeline of solar and battery projects, with a further 1.3GW under development. The Director of Solar & Battery at SSE Renewables, Richard Cave-Bigley, commented that it is a positive step towards reaching net zero targets and enabling stored energy to be supplied to the grid. He is looking forward to the project team's hard work culminating in construction beginning soon.

What Advanced Benefits Does SSE Renewables' Monk Fryston BESS Project Offer?

  • The battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Monk Fryston, Yorkshire will have the capacity to generate 320MW of power.
  • The 640MWh grid-scale battery will be capable of storing energy for up to two hours and releasing it to the national grid when demand is highest.
  • The project will directly link to the existing transmission network and contribute to net zero targets.
  • The project will add to the 1.2GW pipeline of solar and battery projects already developed by SSE Renewables, with a further 1.3GW currently under development.
  • SSE Renewables is committed to ensuring the project meets high safety and operational standards to reduce the impact on the local environment.
  • The project team is working hard on ensuring that construction begins in the near future.
