SRP Boosts Arizona Grid with 340 MW Battery Storage
- SRP boosts Arizona's energy storage with 340 MW/1,360 MWh capacity from two new facilities, including the state's largest standalone battery. Powering homes and storing excess energy for peak demand.
Arizona utility SRP has added 340 MW/1,360 MWh of battery storage capacity with the completion of two new facilities. The Sierra Estrella energy storage facility, with a capacity of 250 MW, is now the largest standalone battery in Arizona. The Superstition energy storage facility, with a capacity of 90 MW, is expected to go live this week.
The new battery storage capacity will be able to power 76,000 homes for four hours and will help store excess energy during low demand periods for use during peak periods. The facilities were designed and will be operated by US battery storage specialist Plus Power, using lithium-ion battery energy storage systems made by Tesla. SRP plans to have nearly 1,300 MW of battery and pumped hydro storage capacity, with over 1,100 MW of additional battery storage resources expected to be online by the end of the year.
