  • Gurin Energy Pte Ltd announces construction of 500-MW/2-GWh BESS in Japan, the largest of its kind in Asia. Set for completion in 2026, this JPY 91 billion project will help Japan meet its renewable energy goals & add 10GW of storage capacity by 2030.

Singapore-based renewables firm Gurin Energy Pte Ltd has announced plans to construct and operate a 500-MW/2-GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Japan. The project, the largest one of its kind in the Asian country, is expected to be completed in 2026 with an estimated investment of JPY 91 billion (USD 633.4m/EUR 577.7m). Toshiba Mitsubishi - Electric Industrial Systems Corporation (TMEIC) will supply the battery technology and Nippon Koei Energy Solutions will provide engineering consulting services. The project will help Japan meet its goal of making renewables account for 36%-38% of its energy mix and adding 10 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030.

What Will Japan's Largest BESS Bring?

  • The 500-MW/2-GWh BESS will strengthen the country's electric grid by providing a reliable source of power and grid stability.
  • It will help Japan reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and reduce emissions associated with electricity production.
  • The project will also help meet Japan's energy demands while providing a clean, renewable source of energy.
  • The BESS will take up a large surface area and will utilize Toshiba Mitsubishi - Electric Industrial Systems Corporation's advanced battery technology.
  • The battery system will be connected to the local transmission grid in order to provide power during peak demand times.
  • The project has estimated completion date of 2026 and is estimated to cost JPY 91 billion (USD 633.4m/EUR 577.7m).
  • The project is expected to create jobs, boost the economy and create opportunities for innovation in the renewable energy sector.
