The project to develop a 25 MWp solar energy plant and improve the information system of the Société béninoise d'énergie électrique (Defissol) is undergoing additionally growth. On 19 November 2020, the mayor of the district of Pobè, Dinan Simon, turned over a 96-hectare story of land to the consortium responsible for building the solar energy plant.

The solar plant to be integrated in the town of Illoulofin in Pobè will certainly infuse 35 GWh of electrical power per year right into the grid of the Société béninoise d'énergie électrique (Sbee), thus covering the intake requirements of around 180,000 individuals. Thanks to this solar project, Benin must reduce its CO2 exhausts by 23,000 heaps per year over a period of 25 years.

A project financed to the tune of 60 million euros.

The project is being applied by the French consortium Eiffage RMT. Building of the 25 MWp solar power plant will certainly take 15 months. It will be financed to the tune of 60.85 million euros within the framework of a partnership between the European Union (EU), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Société béninoise d'énergie électrique (Sbee). "To date, the EU's contribution totals up to EUR10.35 million. A 50 million euro sovereign funding has been given by AFD and 0.5 million euros in equity by Sbee", the EU claims.

The second part of the Defissol project will bring about the full modernization of Sbee's information system, consequently enhancing its performance. Within this framework, a system for digital prepayment of electricity usage with prepaid meters has currently been introduced in the general public firm.

The Defissol project is just one of the front runner projects of the Government Action Programme (GAP) of the President of the Republic of Benin, Patrice Talon. Defissol is also a component of the Prever I program to advertise the green economic climate in Benin (" Promoting the Green Economy in Benin"), introduced in 2017. It is financed by the EU in partnership with AFD la Sbee as well as private sector stars in this West African country. Prever I supports the production and distribution of renewable electrical energy by decreasing the prices of the nationwide grid. The program also advertises energy performance in the productive fields of the economy.

The Prever I program has a profile of EUR138.52 million.
