Ameresco Powers Kifer Battery: 50MW US Energy Storage

Ameresco has partnered with Silicon Valley Power to build a 50 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) adjacent to the Kifer Receiving Station. The 200-MWh capacity asset will provide additional capacity and flexibility to the electrical system, as well as help integrate future renewable energy sources. The 25-year lease and energy storage agreement with the City of Santa Clara will begin construction in mid-2024 and is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2025. The battery will participate in the California ISO markets, assist with balancing generation and consumption, reducing congestion and regulating voltage and frequency. The project is part of Ameresco’s efforts to assist cities in achieving their renewable energy goals.

What Benefits Will Ameresco's 50MW BESS Provide?

  • The 50MW BESS will provide additional capacity and flexibility to the electrical system by balancing generation and consumption.
  • It will reduce congestion and regulate voltage and frequency, allowing for more efficient use of energy resources.
  • It will provide cities with a way to achieve their renewable energy goals faster.
  • It will help integrate future renewable energy sources into the electrical system.
  • The battery will participate in the California ISO markets, providing opportunities for potential revenue for the City of Santa Clara.
