Alinta Unveils 100-MW Battery in WA

Alinta Energy has announced plans to construct a 100-MW battery energy storage facility in Western Australia in order to help stabilise and backup the local power grid. The two-hour battery will be housed at Alinta's power station at Alcoa's Wagerup aluminium refinery and is expected to be operational by the second half of 2021. SEPD and Sunterra Pty Ltd have been hired to deliver the project, with works to commence immediately, while Synergy is constructing the state's first utility-scale energy storage facility - the 100-MW/200-MWh Kwinana battery. An 800-MWh second stage is set to be completed by late 2024.

What Impact Will Alinta Energy's 100-MW Battery Have?

  • The 100-MW battery energy storage facility will be the biggest system of its kind in Western Australia and Australia's second-largest battery behind the Tesla Big Battery in South Australia.
  • The battery is expected to help stabilize the electricity supply in the area by supporting existing power plants, reducing peak demand and providing quick response energy storage services.
  • The battery will help reduce the need for costly network upgrades, allowing for more efficient use of existing infrastructure.
  • The project is expected to create up to 350 jobs during the construction phase, while supporting the state’s renewable energy targets.
  • Alinta Energy estimates the system will reduce electricity costs by between 5 and 10 percent for local businesses and households.
  • The battery will help reduce emissions by providing a more reliable, cleaner source of energy.
