Duke Energy Corp has signed a 20-year contract to buy power from a 199 MW solar project developed by Ranger Power. The project, named Speedway, is already under construction at a 1,700-acre site south of Gwynneville in Shelby County, Indiana. When operational in September 2025, the solar farm will generate enough electricity to cover the annual power consumption of roughly 35,000 homes. The contract is part of Duke Energy's Indiana Integrated Resource Plan, which will add 2,218 MW of solar, 450 MW of solar-plus-storage and 6,200 MW of wind power to its fleet. By diversifying their energy resources and going emission-free, Duke Energy is taking meaningful steps towards a cleaner energy future.

What Is Duke Energy's Indiana Plan?

  • The Indiana Integrated Resource Plan is part of Duke Energy's commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2030.
  • The plan is aimed to provide reliable and clean energy to over 1.7 million Duke Energy customers in Indiana.
  • The plan will add over 8,868 megawatts of renewable energy sources to Duke Energy’s portfolio, such as wind, solar, solar-plus-storage, battery storage, and energy efficiency measures.
  • The Speedway solar project is the first Solar project to be included in the Indiana Integrated Resource Plan.
  • The Speedway solar project alone is capable of providing power to roughly 35,000 homes.
  • The plan is also expected to create around 4,000 jobs in Indiana.
  • The renewable energy sources that are being added to Duke Energy’s Indiana fleet are expected to save customers up to $4 billion in energy costs over the next 20 years.
