RWE Builds Solar-Storage at Hambach Mine

RWE AG has started construction works on an 8.4-MW solar farm in conjunction with an 8-MWh battery storage system in the Hambach lignite opencast mine in the Rhenish mining district, Germany. The solar farm, which will consist of 22,000 bifacial modules, will be able to power 3,100 households. The project is part of an inter-municipal framework plan to re-cultivate the mine and exploit it until the planned Hambach Lake is built and filled with water in about 40 years. The company is partnering with Neuland Hambach GmbH and is expecting to complete the project by the end of the year. RWE intends to invest EUR 4 billion (USD 4.34bn) to build 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects across Germany, with 500 MW located in the Rhenish mining district by 2030.
