  • Discover Morocco's green revolution! A powerful joint venture unveils a 1-GW energy hub to produce hydrogen and ammonia, fueling Europe’s clean energy future.

A joint venture comprising TotalEnergies, EREN Groupe, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and A.P. Møller Capital will develop a 1-GW green energy hub in Morocco, integrating onshore wind and solar power to produce hydrogen and green ammonia. The project, named Chbika, will be located in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, utilizing electricity generated from renewable sources to produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually for the European market.

The partners have secured a preliminary land reservation contract with local authorities and will soon commence pre-front end engineering design (FEED) studies. TE H2, an 80/20 joint venture between TotalEnergies and EREN, will lead renewable asset development, while A.P. Møller Capital will focus on the port and infrastructure. This initiative aims to showcase Morocco's vast renewable potential and stimulate economic development in the region.

What impact will the Chbika green energy hub have on Morocco's economy and renewable potential?

The Chbika green energy hub is poised to play a transformative role in Morocco's economy and its renewable energy landscape. Here are some of the potential impacts of the project:

  • Boosting Local Economy: The construction and operation of the green energy hub are expected to create numerous job opportunities for local residents, from construction roles to positions in operations and maintenance of the energy facilities.
  • Attracting Foreign Investment: As a flagship project, Chbika may attract additional foreign investments in the renewable energy sector, positioning Morocco as a hub for green energy initiatives in North Africa.
  • Strengthening Energy Security: By integrating a diverse mix of renewable sources, Morocco can enhance its energy security and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, fostering greater energy independence.
  • Reducing Carbon Footprint: The production of green ammonia from renewable sources supports global decarbonization efforts, contributing to Morocco's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Promoting Technological Advancements: The project is likely to stimulate innovation in renewable energy technologies and hydrogen production, paving the way for R&D collaborations with international partners.
  • Export Opportunities: With a focus on producing green ammonia for the European market, Chbika opens up significant export opportunities, positioning Morocco as a key player in the global hydrogen market.
  • Enhancing Regional Infrastructure: The development of related infrastructure—such as ports and transportation networks—will benefit not only the energy project but also improve overall regional connectivity and economic activity.
  • Diversifying Energy Sources: By investing in both wind and solar energy, Morocco can diversify its energy portfolio, which is crucial for a reliable and sustainable energy supply.
  • Supporting Local Industries: The availability of green hydrogen and ammonia may support the development of local industries, potentially reducing production costs and enhancing competitiveness in various sectors.
  • Skill Development and Training Opportunities: The project will require a skilled workforce, offering training programs that can upskill the local population, leading to long-term career opportunities in green technology and renewable energy.
  • Aligning with National Goals: Chbika complements Morocco's national energy strategy, which aims to achieve 52% of installed capacity from renewable sources, thereby accelerating the country's transition to a sustainable energy system.
  • Encouraging Regional Cooperation: The project may foster collaboration among neighboring countries in energy sharing, addressing regional energy needs, and adapting best practices in renewable energy development.
  • Public and Environmental Awareness: The visibility of large-scale green energy projects like Chbika can enhance public awareness about the importance of sustainability, motivating broader support for renewable initiatives across Morocco.

By harnessing its renewable potential, the Chbika green energy hub has the capacity to serve as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and environmental sustainability in Morocco and beyond.
