GridPoint Targets 2 GW of Batteries at 20,000 US Commercial Sites

GridPoint is targeting 2 GW of on-site battery storage across the more than 20,000 U.S. commercial buildings that run its energy management software, the company said on Nov. 4. Co-founder Adrian De Luca has returned as chief executive officer.

The GridPoint platform controls HVAC, refrigeration and lighting for chains such as Walgreens, Panda Express and Wendy's. Battery storage would sit on top of those controls. GridPoint put the gain at up to an additional 15% off bills at qualifying sites, on top of the 20% its customers typically save now. Storage stays optional, offered "where site economics support it."

Power prices drive the pitch. Commercial electricity rates across GridPoint sites rose 42% over the past five years, the company said. The national climb was slower. U.S. commercial customers paid an average 13.37 cents per kWh in 2025, against 10.59 cents in 2020, data from the Energy Information Administration show.

The plan in numbers

  • 2 GW of on-site battery storage targeted across GridPoint's existing customer sites; no MWh figure or timeline was given.
  • 20,000+ commercial buildings run the GridPoint platform.
  • About 100 kW of battery power per building if 2 GW were spread evenly over 20,000 sites (list.solar calculation).
  • 42% rise in commercial rates at GridPoint sites over five years, or about 7.3% a year compounded (list.solar calculation).
  • 26% rise in the U.S. average commercial price from 2020 to 2025, based on EIA data (list.solar calculation).
  • Up to 15% extra bill savings at qualifying sites, on top of a typical 20% from GridPoint's controls.
  • 1,699 weather-driven outages hit GridPoint customer sites in 26 states over the past year, the company said.

De Luca co-founded GridPoint in 2003 with chairman Peter Corsell and was its first vice president of sales and marketing. He returns from I Squared Capital, where he invested in energy and grid technology businesses. His company profile says he rejoined to lead a move into distributed storage and virtual power plant aggregation.

"Adding storage gives those businesses the ability to reduce peak demand, store lower-cost energy for use when electricity is more expensive, and participate in utility and capacity programs that can create new revenue streams," De Luca said in a statement.

GridPoint has not named a battery supplier, a financing partner or a date for the first installations.
