The 75MW/150MWh battery in Poolbeg is to be the EU's biggest battery energy storage system (BESS) project by energy capability, the business stated. A second 30MW/60MWh possession is also to be created at South Wall, with both batteries to be created at existing ESB plants.

Together with projects already underway at Inchicore, Dublin, and Aghada, Co Cork, the companies currently have a portfolio of 308MWh under advancement.

The 38MWh Aghada as well as 60 MWh Inchicore systems are set to come online in very early 2022, which the Poolbeg and South Wall batteries schedule for conclusion in very early 2023.

" ESB is extremely thrilled to be partnering with Fluence in supplying our initial battery portfolio of scale onto the Irish grid," said head of asset advancement at ESB Generation Trading, Paul Smith.

" This brand-new battery capacity is an instance of ESB's commitment to developing renewables-enabling projects constant with our Better Future Strategy, leading the transition to trusted, budget friendly low carbon power. We expect dealing with our partners to safely progress these projects over the coming 18 months."

The three projects in Dublin, in addition to the project in Aghada all have a period of two hours, permitting them to give grid solutions that would certainly otherwise be offered by nonrenewable fuel source nuclear power plant.

The storage space market in Ireland has been heating up, in 2020 its very first large-scale battery storage projects were energised, with Statkraft finishing its 11MW Kerry battery storage project in January 2020, the very first utility-scale battery project in the country. Following this, programmer Lumcloon Energy commemorated its 100MW battery storage space facility in Co. Offaly being energised in December.

Going forwards, the following year will be key for Ireland's 70x30 environment ambitions added head of state for Fluence Europe, Middle East and Africa Paul McCusker.

" Fluence currently has a near 100MWh portfolio of projects with the ESB, as well as we are delighted to include in that with the Poolbeg as well as South Wall energy storage solutions. These projects stand for a leap ahead in terms of integrity for the electrical energy system and also will promptly add much required adaptable capability in the constricted Dublin area."
