Austria scraps its sun tax
Austria’s renewable energy industry has for months been vehemently calling for an “emergency package” from policymakers to ensure the further expansion of clean energy. With a snap election looming on Sunday – following the collapse of the ruling Austrian People’s Party and Freedom Party of Austria coalition government, and the resignation of scandal-hit vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache – the nation’s political parties last week approved a list of clean energy measures which are expected to be approved by parliament on Wednesday. Federal association Photovoltaic Austria (PVA) welcomed the agreement and predicted it could help stave off a 30% solar market slump next year. The parties have agreed to put aside €36 million per year from next year to 2022 to fund solar and energy storage as part of the green electricity package. “With the new funds we are creating the conditions for … 100% renewable electricity,” said PVA managing director Vera Immitzer. Sun tax halted The association has already seen one of its other demands met with the cancellation on Thursday of the ‘sun tax’ on the consumption of power generated by householders with rooftop arrays. Under the previous rules, solar households could consume 25 MWh of self-generated solar free of charge but then had to pay a €0.015 levy on every subsequent kilowatt-hour consumed during the life of the PV system. “We are very pleased that the announcements are now followed by action and that the electricity tax for self-produced photovoltaic electricity is finally canceled,” added Immitzer. The government has set a goal of a fully renewable energy system by 2030. The PVA has calculated that would require around 15 GW of solar power generation capacity. Austria currently has around 10% of that amount.

Austria's EUR 150m Boost for Renewable Investments in 2024
Austria will allocate EUR 150 million in investment grants in 2024 to support the deployment of renewable energy, with the majority of the funding going towards solar photovoltaic systems. Solar systems of various sizes will receive funding based on a tiered system, with a bidding process for larger projects. Additionally, funding will also be allocated for hydropower, biomass, and wind power investments. The funding will be distributed through three calls in April, June, and October, with the first call running from April 15 to April 29. Austria also provides market premiums to incentivize renewables expansion, with significant funding volumes available for solar energy, wind power, biomass, and hydropower. This aims to provide a stable investment framework for companies in the long term and help Austria continue to expand its green electricity production.Climate protection minister Leonore Gewessler highlighted Austria's progress in expanding green electricity, with 85% of electricity consumption already covered by renewables in 2024. This marks a significant increase from previous years and demonstrates Austria's commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable energy system. What is Austria's plan for allocating EUR 150 million in renewable energy grants? Austria's Solar Sector Soars: 2.6 GWp Installed in 2023
Austria's solar sector experienced significant growth in 2023, with annual solar installations jumping to 2.6 GWp, tripling the previous year's expansion. This increase was driven by the installation of over 130,000 new photovoltaic systems, bringing the country's total PV installations to nearly 390,000 with a combined capacity of 6.4 GWp.PV Austria, the industry association, emphasized the need for continued government support to sustain this growth, including streamlined approval processes and rapid grid expansion. The organization highlighted the goal of reaching 21 GWp of PV capacity by 2030 for 100% renewable electricity supply and over 41 GWp by 2040 for climate neutrality. Currently, PV electricity accounts for 12% of Austria's electricity demand.Overall, Austria's solar sector has shown promising growth in 2023, but continued government efforts will be crucial to ensure the success of the PV industry in the coming years. PV Austria's call for increased support and investment reflects the country's ambitious goals for renewable energy and climate neutrality in the future. What drove Austria's solar sector to triple its annual installations in 2023? Government support: Continued government support, including streamlined approval processes and rapid grid expansion, drove the significant growth in Austria's solar sector in 2023. Industry goals: PV Austria emphasized the goal of reaching 21 GWp of PV capacity by 2030 for 100% renewable electricity supply and over 41 GWp by 2040 for climate neutrality, motivating increased installations. Increasing demand: With PV electricity currently accounting for 12% of Austria's electricity demand, there is a growing need for more solar installations to meet the country's renewable energy targets. Environmental concerns: The push for climate neutrality and the increasing awareness of the environmental benefits of solar energy have also contributed to the tripling of annual installations in Austria's solar sector.

Austria doubles financial support for solar rebates
Austria's coalition government has increased the allocate its household solar subsidy program. Homeowners that set up systems with capacities of approximately 5 kW will currently receive a rebate of EUR250 per grid-connected kilowatt installed, or EUR350 per kilowatt of off-grid ability. The brand-new budget for the program is EUR10 million and also the application period, which is currently open, has been expanded, following hold-ups activated by the Covid-19 dilemma. The money will certainly appear of the Austrian climate and energy fund, which additionally provides aids for PV projects as much as 1 MW in size-- primarily in areas affected by environment modification. "We are alleviated that this vital and also extensively reliable little scale system funding from the environment fund is ultimately starting and that the value of solar energy generation is being identified by increasing the financing spending plan," stated Vera Immitzer, taking care of supervisor of the Federal Association of Photovoltaic Austria. "The top priority program of the climate fund offered today starts the required solar change for every person. The Austrian federal government aims to produce all of the nation's electricity from renewables by 2030. Therefore, it wishes to set clear clean-energy development targets, with a new renewable-energy growth legislation now being wrapped up.
