Xcel Triples Solar with 710MW Sherco Park

Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has given unanimous approval for utility Xcel Energy's plan to expand Sherco Solar Park to 710 MW. The USD-406-million expansion will bring Xcel's total investment in Sherco to over USD 1 billion, and will triple the amount of solar energy on its Upper Midwest system by 2028. Construction of the initial 460-MW phase began in late April, and the entire capacity should be commissioned by the end of 2025. Output from the project is expected to be enough to supply over 150,000 homes annually.

What Impact Will Xcel's USD 1B Investment in Sherco Solar Park Have?

  • The USD 1 billion investment to expand the Sherco Solar Park is expected to create approximately 400 jobs during the construction period and 10 full-time positions for its ongoing operation and maintenance.
  • The new solar capacity is expected to help Xcel Energy meet Minnesota's 25% by 2025 renewable energy standard.
  • The project will also provide local tax benefits to the Becker and Benton county communities.
  • The expansion will help reduce carbon emissions in the region as part of Xcel’s goal of providing 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050.
  • The new solar energy from the Sherco Solar Park expansion will diversify Xcel Energy’s energy mix and reduce the company’s reliance on natural gas and other fossil fuels.
  • Xcel Energy’s investment in the Sherco Solar Park is part of its commitment to reduce emissions by 80% by 2030.
