World Sustainability Forum Continues Global Impact with WSF-13 and Sustainability Awards in 2027

A Global Gathering for Sustainability Research

The World Sustainability Forum (WSF) brings together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners from around the world to address pressing sustainability challenges through interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. 

The most recent edition, the 12th World Sustainability Forum (WSF-12), was held in Hong Kong, China, from 21 to 24 August 2026. Organized by MDPI and the journal Sustainability, and proudly supported by Strategic Partner Chinese National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), featured through its international communication brand E-Light, the conference brought together more than 300 participants from 53 countries. Through plenary presentations, scientific sessions, and panel discussions, WSF-12 provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring solutions to complex environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Looking Ahead to WSF-13

The 13th World Sustainability Forum (WSF-13)—Science, Policy and Practice for Sustainable Cities and Healthy Coasts will take place in Nice, France, from 8-11 June 2027. Organized again by MDPI and the Sustainability journal, in collaboration with Université Côte d'Azur, the conference will facilitate timely discussions spanning renewable energy, climate action, sustainable infrastructure, resource management, circular economy, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable urban development.

Bringing together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners from around the world, WSF-13 will continue the Forum's mission of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing solutions that support a more sustainable future.

Recognizing Sustainability Excellence Through the MDPI Sustainability Foundation Awards

A key feature of the World Sustainability Forum is its commitment not only to advancing scientific exchange but also to recognizing the researchers and leaders whose work is creating meaningful impact. Since 2017, the MDPI Sustainability Foundation Awards have celebrated outstanding contributions to sustainability research, innovation, and leadership, honoring individuals whose achievements have helped address global environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Presented in conjunction with the World Sustainability Forum, the Foundation's flagship awards recognize both established and emerging leaders whose work is shaping a more sustainable future.

2026 World Sustainability Award (WSA)

The WSA recognizes senior researchers who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained contributions to sustainability research and practice. The award carries a prize of 100,000 USD and honors individuals whose work has achieved significant scientific and societal impact.

At WSF-12, the 2026 WSA was presented to Prof. Zongping Shao (Curtin University, Australia) for his pioneering contributions to sustainable energy materials and clean energy technologies. His work has advanced innovative energy systems that support global decarbonization efforts and the transition toward a zero-carbon future.

2026 Emerging Sustainability Leader Award (ESLA)

The ESLA recognizes outstanding early-career researchers whose work demonstrates exceptional promise, innovation, and impact in sustainability. Carrying a prize of 20,000 USD, the award celebrates emerging leaders whose research and leadership are helping address critical environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The 2026 ESLA recipient, Asst. Prof. Katrina Knauer (University of Colorado Boulder & National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), USA), was recognized for her leadership in developing circular solutions for plastics and advancing materials innovations that combine environmental responsibility with practical scalability.

Together, these awards highlight the importance of supporting both established leaders and the next generation of sustainability innovators who are shaping solutions for global environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Nominations Are Open for the 2027 Awards!

The MDPI Sustainability Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the 2027 World Sustainability Award and 2027 Emerging Sustainability Leader Award.

Researchers, institutions, and organizations are encouraged to nominate outstanding candidates whose work has made significant contributions to advancing sustainability knowledge, policy, technology, or implementation.
