PGE Starts Building 400-MW Gryfino Battery in Poland With Fluence
- PGE started building a battery of up to 400 MW and at least 800 MWh near Gryfino, in northwest Poland, on Oct. 26.
- SPEC BAU Polska and EL Professional hold the PLN 1.14 billion turnkey contract, and Fluence supplies its Smartstack storage platform.
- PGE plans to switch the battery on at the end of 2028; the project already holds a 17-year capacity market contract.
PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna has started building a battery of up to 400 MW and at least 800 MWh near Gryfino, in northwest Poland. Its renewables unit, PGE Energia Odnawialna, announced the start on Oct. 26. It plans to switch the system on at the end of 2028.
A consortium of two Polish companies, SPEC BAU Polska and EL Professional, holds the turnkey contract. It covers design, supply, construction, installation and commissioning, plus 36 months of warranty service. The gross contract value is PLN 1.142 billion, or about $291 million at the National Bank of Poland's Oct. 26 rate (list.solar calculation). The storage technology comes from Fluence, which will use its Smartstack platform.
The site is in Nowe Czarnowo, next to PGE's Dolna Odra power station. PGE says the battery will charge when wind and solar output runs high and discharge at peak demand, supporting the national power grid. The project already holds a 17-year contract from Poland's capacity market.
Gryfino is PGE's second large battery storage project. The first, at Żarnowiec in Pomerania province, has 262 MW and about 981 MWh. Construction began there in September 2025, and it is due in the second quarter of 2027. PGE had signed the Żarnowiec deal with LG Energy Solution Wrocław that March.
The Gryfino battery in numbers
- 400 MW of maximum power and 800 MWh of minimum capacity, under PGE's tender terms.
- 2 hours of output at full power from the minimum capacity (list.solar calculation).
- PLN 1,428 ($363) per kWh of minimum capacity, based on the gross contract value (list.solar calculation).
- 3 bids came in for the tender, which PGE opened in August 2025.
- 53% more power than the Żarnowiec battery, with about 18% less energy (list.solar calculation).
- 710.6 MW / 3,800 MWh at PGE's Żarnowiec pumped-storage plant, the larger of two sites on grid operator PSE's transmission-grid storage register.
PGE Chief Executive Officer Dariusz Lubera said at the ceremony that the group is investing more than PLN 1.14 billion in West Pomerania. He tied the choice of Polish contractors to PGE's target of a 65% local-content share.
PGE Energia Odnawialna will supervise construction. The end-2028 start-up goal is earlier than the 2029 date PGE gave when it opened the tender in August 2025.
