India’s state utility plotting 5GW solar plant, according to reports

India’s state-run electricity generation utility NTPC could build India’s "largest" solar park in the western state of Gujarat, according to The Economic Times and Bloomberg.
The proposed 5GW facility would cost 25,000 Indian crore (about US$3.5 billion) and begin operations in 2024, according to statements made by an anonymous NTPC spokesperson to Bloomberg. It is alleged that the company may invite bids from developers to set up projects in the park.
While NTPC did not respond to PV Tech’s requests for comment on or confirmation of the news, corporate communications executive Deepna Metha shared a CNBC-TV 18 report about the proposed development on Twitter on Wednesday.
Should it go ahead with the reported capacity, the project would bring India’s largest power producer closer to its aim of building 32GW of capacity by 2032.
This new development follows news from earlier this week that NTPC cinched 160MW of solar capacity in Rajasthan in a reverse auction held by the government last June.
