Ignitis Switches On 173.6-MW Tume Solar Farm in Latvia

Ignitis Group has started commercial operation at its 173.6-MW Tume solar farm in Latvia's Tukums municipality, the Lithuanian utility said in a statement on Nov. 6. The plant lifts the group's installed green capacity to 2.3 GW from 2.1 GW.

Tume covers 302 hectares and has more than 282,000 panels. Ignitis expects it to meet the annual power demand of around 85,000 households. Total investment is up to €106 million ($118 million). Trina Solar supplied the modules, according to the group's first-quarter report. It is the first project of subsidiary Ignitis Renewables to use sun-tracking mounts. It is also the first that the company's own staff will mainly maintain.

The farm is the third Ignitis solar project in Latvia, after the 94-MW Vārme and the two-phase, 145-MW Stelpe, both commissioned in 2025. Ignitis calls Tume one of the largest solar projects in the Baltics. Latvia is adding utility-scale solar quickly. Five new solar parks with a combined 519 MW joined the country's transmission grid in 2026 through early August, according to grid operator AST.

The plant in numbers

  • 173.6 MW on 302 hectares, or about 0.57 MW per hectare (list.solar calculation).
  • 282,000+ panels, made by Trina Solar.
  • €0.61 of investment per watt, based on the budget of up to €106 million (list.solar calculation).
  • 73% more operating solar capacity for Ignitis in Latvia, up from 239 MW to about 413 MW (list.solar calculation).
  • 107.2 MW / 214.5 MWh battery under construction at the site, or about two hours of storage (list.solar calculation).
  • 519 MW of new solar parks connected to Latvia's transmission grid in 2026 by early August, according to AST.

Ignitis Renewables took the final investment decision on the Tume battery in July. The system will be integrated with the solar farm and costs approximately €35 million ($39 million), the company said at the time. Commercial operation is estimated for 2028.

"Expanding expertise within our team enables us to manage renewable energy assets more effectively, maintain high standards and secure strong long-term performance," Frank Oomen, CEO of Ignitis Renewables, said in a statement.

Ignitis said the Tume start does not change its 2026 guidance for adjusted EBITDA and investments. The group targets 2.8 GW to 3.2 GW of installed green capacity by 2029, up from 2.1 GW in 2025.
