What happened?

Spanish electric utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) has won a tender to build a 25-MWp floating solar plant in the Alsace region of France. The project will be installed on the basin of the Bischwiller gravel pit, near the border with Germany and Switzerland. The solar park is expected to generate 27 GWh of electricity annually, enough to cover the consumption of almost 10,000 homes.

Why does it matter?

This project is significant for Iberdrola as it will be the company's first floating solar plant in France. It is also important for the region as it will provide clean, renewable energy to local households. The solar park will also create jobs during its construction and operation, and will help France to meet its renewable energy targets.

What's next?

Iberdrola will complete environmental and technical studies this year to determine the best technological solution for the project. The company plans to apply for a building permit in the spring of 2024 and commercial operations are expected to begin late in the summer of 2026. Iberdrola also plans to spend EUR 4 billion on projects in France by 2025, mainly in the renewable energy field.
