Google Powers Irish Offices & Data Centre With Solar
- Google and Power Capital Renewable Energy partner up for 14-year power purchase agreement to provide 83 MW of solar energy to Google's data center and offices in Ireland, helping reach Ireland's 2030 targets and Google's goal of operating on carbon-free energy every hour of every day by 2030.
Google and Power Capital Renewable Energy (PCRE) have entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) to provide solar energy to power Google’s data center and offices in Ireland. The agreement is for a period of fourteen years and entails part of the production from a 83 MW capacity solar farm currently under construction in County Wexford, Ireland. Power Capital is investing €54m towards the site construction and connection into a 110kV substation. The project is being partially financed by AIB and La Banque Postale and is expected to be completed by early 2022.
The co-chief executives and founders of Power Capital stated that partnering with Google is a significant milestone for the company, as it will add 83 MW of solar energy to the grid and help reach Ireland’s 2030 targets. Ainhoa Anda, Google’s data center energy senior lead, commented that technology can be part of the solution to climate change and the agreement with Power Capital takes them one step closer to achieving their goal of operating on carbon-free energy every hour of every day by 2030. Google has also teamed up with Apex Clean Energy for 189 MW of capacity for the Timbermill Wind project in North Carolina and EDPR North America Distributed Generation LLC for 500 MW of distributed solar PV projects in the USA.
