  • CHN Energy connected a 60-MW, 120-MWh battery station at its Rudong solar-hydrogen complex in Jiangsu to the grid on Oct. 14.
  • China had 153 GW / 396 GWh of new-type storage in operation at the end of June, up 61% in a year.
  • The complex's 482-ton-a-year hydrogen plant is not running yet, and CHN Energy has given no start date.

China Energy Investment Corp. connected a 60-megawatt, 120-megawatt-hour battery station at its Rudong solar-hydrogen complex in Jiangsu to the grid on Oct. 14. It will help the regional grid meet peak demand and absorb renewables, the state-owned group, known as CHN Energy, said on Oct. 19.

Guohua Energy Investment's Jiangsu branch, a CHN Energy unit, built the station on tidal flats outside the seawall in Rudong County, Nantong. It is the branch's first shared storage station. The Jiangsu grid dispatches the batteries. They charge when solar output exceeds what the grid can absorb and discharge at peak demand.

China's fleet of new-type storage, mostly lithium-ion batteries, reached 153 gigawatts / 396 gigawatt-hours at the end of June. That was up 61% in a year, the National Energy Administration said on July 30. Capacity was 136 GW at the end of 2025, the administration's annual report shows.

The station in numbers

  • 60 MW / 120 MWh on the AC side, connected at full capacity on Oct. 14.
  • 2 hours at full power, versus a national average of about 2.6 hours (list.solar calculation from NEA data).
  • 27 battery containers of 5 MWh each, or 135 MWh in total, 12.5% above the AC-side rating (list.solar calculation).
  • 67.5 MW of power conversion in 14 units: 13 of 5 MW and one of 2.5 MW (list.solar calculation).
  • About 12 GWh a year to the grid, saving 1,500 tons of standard coal and 3,600 tons of CO2, CHN Energy estimates.
  • About 100 full discharges a year, or roughly one every 3.7 days, at that output (list.solar calculation).
  • 400 MW of solar on the same site, expected to deliver 468 GWh a year.

The battery completes the power side of the complex. The solar plant was fully connected on April 29, 2025. CHN Energy declared the project complete on June 10, including an electrolysis plant rated at 1,500 standard cubic meters of hydrogen an hour.

CHN Energy calls the station a giant "power bank" on the tidal flats.

Solar hydrogen output has not started. Once it does, the electrolyzers will ramp up to absorb surplus power and cut demand at peak hours, CHN Energy said. The plant is designed for 482 tons of green hydrogen a year. CHN Energy has given no start date. In June, project manager Jiang Bin targeted August or September for full operation, according to the Nantong city government.
