What happened?

Alfen and Dutch energy storage provider SemperPower have launched a 30MW battery storage system in Vlissingen, Netherlands. This system, named Project Pollux, will use Alfen’s TheBattery Elements and will help balance the grid and manage the unpredictability of renewable energy sources. Alfen will manage design, supply, civil works, installation, tests and long-term maintenance, while SemperPower will develop, finance and operate the system. The system is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2023. (Source: Solar Power Portal)

Why does it matter?

Project Pollux is an important step towards a more sustainable energy future. With large-scale battery energy storage systems, renewable energy can be stored at times of abundance and released when the market demands it. This helps to balance the grid and manage the unpredictability of renewable energy sources, making the grid more future-proof and effectively managing demands on the grid. Additionally, this project will create jobs in the local area and contribute to the economy of Vlissingen.

What's next?

The launch of Project Pollux is just the beginning of the energy transition in Europe. As demand for renewable energy continues to grow, more projects similar to Project Pollux will be needed in order to manage the grid and ensure that renewable energy is used efficiently. Additionally, other countries in Europe will be looking to the Netherlands as an example of how to transition to a more sustainable energy future. As such, Project Pollux will be a key part of the energy transition in Europe.
