Amprius Technologies has introduced a new ultra-high-power-high-energy lithium-ion battery, offering a discharge rate of 10C and an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. Benefits brought to the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industries include an extended flight range of up to 50 per cent and increased payload capacity. The cell also boasts a power density of 3500 W/kg under standard discharge conditions and exceeding 4400 W/kg at lower depths of discharge. High energy density and high power density reduces battery weight and volume, leading to extended range, reduced charging frequency, and lower operating costs. The cell also features ultra-fast charging (UFC) which enables it to reach 80 per cent charge in around 6 minutes. Samples of the cell are expected to be available by the end of 2023 with commercialization slated for early 2024.
